It’s funny that what follows came to my attention today — it’s a story about running while on vacation that was published recently in Canadian Running Magazine. An image I shot was used on the opening page to illustrate a section about running in Norway. Here’s the cover — I did not shoot the picture, but it’ll help you find the issue if you’re so inclined.
The story struck a chord I just wrapped up a trip to Rome, where I went every morning on incredible urban runs, watching the city awaken and come to life. One day I took a 12k around the Vatican, the next a 10k around the Colusseum, the next a 12k through Rome’s northern end, so on and so on. On my iPhone I had a GPS-enabled offline map of the city, so when we got lost I pulled out the phone and tracked us down. I can’t imagine a better way to see Rome than running through hidden alleyways as shopkeepers open their doors and welcome a new day. The streets are super narrow, and every so often you can peer down a long straight road and catch a fleeting glimpse some 2,000 year old landmark.
What a place.
